Isn't it beautiful!
This is the hops harvest from the Rogue Farm courtesy of realbeer.com!
On that same note the Septembeer Fest is coming up this weekend in Corvallis at the Fairgrounds on Saturday. It is put on by the Heart of the Valley Homebrewers and I am getting excited! As soon as I get off work at Camellia I'll be there!

The dirt is from a research facility and is supposedly better then potting soil and the pot I got from a local thrift store. I soaked the soil for a few hours and then nestled their roots in. It was very odd the chicks roots were much longer then the hens so I hope that I did not kill the hen when I pulled my start.
Here it is!
What a great vacation.

Ralph Wells
1959 - 2008
Last week this world lost an amazing person. I cannot express my feelings on Ralph's life or my sadness over this loss. He was a great man who spoke the truth and had an amazing talent. Ralph is one of few people who I have always respected and admired.
His obituary, from his mother, Kathryn Wells -
A program of music and memories to honor the life and artistic
achievements of Ralph Wells will be held on Saturday, June 28th at 5
p.m. in the Scottish Rite Auditorium at 1512 SW Morrison Street in
Portland. The noted artist and operatic baritone died June 18th at his
home in Corvallis after a long struggle with a brain tumor and stroke.
Ralph was born on Oct. 1, 1959, in Portland to Arlen and Kathryn
Wells. Seeds planted in childhood often take a lifetime to blossom. In
Ralph's case, he was born to create theatre, art and music. His
parents, both of whom loved classical music, took him to the symphonies
and operas, and at the age of five, he was already watching old films
on TV. Ralph was to later teach Film History while still a student at
Portland State University, from whence he graduated, Valedictorian,
with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Ralph soon began to sing professionally and was in San Francisco's
Merola Opera program, followed by the Petrie Award from Oregon State
University. The award placed him in Germany, where he pursued his
parallel interests in art and music. His pen-and-ink work, whose
subjects spanned Oregon mountain scenes, as well as movie and artistic
legends, enjoyed widespread fame, both here and abroad.
Wells appeared in numerous operas throughout the country, singing over
40 roles. He debuted with the Los Angeles Opera in 2002, as Sonora in
Puccini's "Fanciulla del West," starring Placido Domingo. That same
year, he made his Lincoln Center debut in Gordon Getty's "Joan and the
Bells" at Juilliard. Wells returned to LA Opera for "Die Frau Ohne
Schatten" under the baton of Kent Nagano.
In 2006, Wells realized his dream of staging "Farewell, Vienna!" the
musical show he created about the life of legendary Austrian composer,
Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who fled the Nazis and found success in
writing film scores for the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Wells was a member of the Music Faculty at Oregon State University in
Corvallis, where his wife Elizabeth and he formed the Willamette
Concert Opera, which performed for four seasons there, as well as in
Portland and Eugene. He was to have sung in "Susannah" at the Scottish
Rite this coming weekend, where the memorial will be held.
Ralph Wells Studio was active for 10 years in Portland, with students
of all ages. His students, many of whom are in the chorus of Portland
Opera, brought him great joy and lasting friendships. He will be
greatly missed by all.
Wells is survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth in Corvallis, mother
Kathryn, and brother Robert in Portland. Contributions may be given to the Oregon Humane Society.

I bought a table and chairs today. It is a really great drop leaf pedestal table I don't dig the chairs but they came as a set so Ill deal with that later. For now I have different chairs picked out and these new chairs and the table are all in for a new coat of paint - a heavy cream I think.
I will start looking at paint tomorrow so I will have almost two weeks before I paint.
I got the fabric to cover the chairs last week. Oh this is going to be good!

Two days left and things are moving along nicely
Doug asked me to come visit him in Perth but I still have not applied for my Passport - Bad Melinda! So I can't go. Hopefully in a few months he will transfer closer to Sydney and I will get to visit him there. Sydney sounds way more interesting to me then Perth although if I could I would go see both.
So I am going to relax for my 15 days off between graduation and school. I will go to the beach for a few days but I have decided not big trips for me. Speaking of big trips, Meredith and Dad will be getting back from India just in time for my graduation! I think I will be putting off any real travel until early spring when Dad and I are hopefully going to Hawaii to try out our new scuba skills :)
More later for now I do have to study "Forest Management and Wildlife Conservation"
Tuesday, June 3, 2008
Meredith is in India now and she took Dad with her!
I am so excited for them! She is going to try to buy me wooden painted bangles!

Midterms went fine and I am working on my papers now.
I am really excited because I think I am going to buy myself some bowels like the ones pictured here! I love the vintage looking bowls as you know from my rave on Typhoons Vintage Kitchen collection. During Christmas I was shopping in Macy's (which is rare) and I noticed that the Martha Stewart collection there aint bad! I really liked the colors she used this season. Anyway I am really having fun looking at kitchen stuff and rugs and pillows! Got to get back to work!

The perfect flat
I got new shoes! No dress, but shoes! I think they are really cute and I don't want to wear heels all the time so I love them! They do look way better when you can't see the metallic, the silver is way to shinny. Anyway now there are a billion dresses I can wear now that I have better white shoes! Tomorrow I am going to take the day off and then the term begins! Wish me luck, maybe ill wear my lucky new shoes!

I am finally finished with my paper!!! All I have left to do if format the references which is really painful because my hand is screwed up from writing and typing so much so I am doing everything one handed. This term has been so hard I have decided that I am going to get myself something pretty when it is over! I don't know what it is yet but ill know when I see it! Ohhh I'm excited!

Graduation Dresses
So graduation dresses have traditionally been white ever since women started graduating from anything so I would love it if my dress were a simple, white dress. I had originally planned on a dress of many greens (because of my duel interest in apparel design and forestry) but I'm just not finding the greens I want and I don't have time to make something that complicated. Part of me wants a big Betsy Johnson style dress but really I think I want something simple and beautiful and easy to wear like this or like what Bonnie wears in the Bonnie and Clyde death scene from the 1967 film. Simple beauty.

All I have to say is... Its really too bad that I need a DRESS for graduation not a necklace.
After yesterdays find I decided to give etsy another chance and there is some beautiful stuff. I am very tempted to buy some of these things because I will probably get to dress up some after I graduate and stop spending all my time in the Library! Joshua bought me a beautiful necklace when we visited Wallace Idaho (beautiful town!) this summer, and it is the necklace I want to wear for graduation. But I really need a dress. I want to get to wear something pretty for four years of hard work! I think my mom and I are going to go to Portland and visit some of the vintage shops I have been dying to try shopvintageportland.com makes me drool everyday. I know its lame of me and a waste of time to check it everyday but I love this stuff! I just hope I can find something for a decent price, I just can't stand to drop $100 on this dress, it would seem so wasteful. More about dresses tomorrow, I can't wait!

Beautiful Airplane
I ran across the cutes Etsy shop today. I'm normally not crazy about Etsy shops, I usually spend a lot of time online and end up finding what I would have found if I would have gotten up and gone to the art fair. But this shop is Beautiful. Mr. Joshua - have you bought my birthday present yet? I love this necklace with a rusted antique toy airplane! I have always loved planes and this is such a distinctive piece. Some of her other pieces are way too bulky for me but I think this is precious.

Business Cards
So yesterday got me thinking about business cards. I absolutely refused to let myself take any because I cannot afford to get more work now - I NEED to graduate! Anyway, I have no acutal business cards of my own and I really need some for June when I begin my own work. I think that Business Cards should be an expression of self and show people what you are all about so I have been thinking about what would be a good design, colors etc. for me. I would like letterpress but I don't really have the mental capacity to make that serious of a decision right now. I really like the cards that are skinny, I am also a fan of rounded edges or other unique edging (but not together). Anyway, I am excited to be creative about this. I've thought about using some colored stitching on an otherwise plain card. If you have any ideas for me let me know!

Lovely Day
I finally got to go do something fun today - I went to the perfectly pearl modern bridal event in Portland's Pearl district. It was super fun! I hope they post pictures soon so I can show you. There was a model there wearing the most beautiful halter dress! Then I found out it was a Vera Wang - go figure!

Work for School!
I really dislike spending my time on this when I have sooooooooooooo much other stuff on my plate. Anyway, I took last week off of work which was nice for school. I have 2 papers 1 project/presentation, 4 homeworks and 2 exams - and I will be done for the term. I have tons of work to do over the break, but it will be work that I love and care about! Yay!

Takin an easy
The wedding website information is all finished, the bare bones will be up this coming week! I will add an accessories section and the jewelry section later but for now I am so happy! I studied all week for my midterm this Wednesday so i finally have a bit of a break which is nice because this cold thing is really getting to me. My parents are back home and it is really nice to see them. Mom brought me some muumuus back from Hawaii to alter and play around with. I will probably do that on Spring Break and show y'all some before and after pictures. But for now I am going to read for class and try to get well and take an easy... maybe make some treats.

As always
As always I have too much to do but for some reason something is making me take a bit of any easy today. I got up late and made a nice breakfast and then I met Doug in Corvallis to come to my parents in Salem. They are still gone though - those lucky ducks are in Hawaii. They have been traveling quite a bit recently this is a picture of them scuba diving in Australia (I put the cheesy title on). It looks kinda werid because it was taken with an underwater camera but cute none the less. I am trying not to think about things other then school but all I can think about is cooking good food, designing new stationary and vintage clothes. Soon Spring break will be here, soon...

Valentines and School
Happy Valentine's Day (late)!
I think I did OK on my exam, Wine and Wiskers was a huge success and Everything is going beautifully! I don't have another exam for almost two weeks! Plus I have 17 weeks left till I graduate and I am only taking 11 credits next term!
There is a light at the end of this sixteen year tunnel!

Nice Things To Look At
Every year for Christmas my Aunt Debbie and Uncle Gerry get me the Sierra Club "Engagement Calendar" I was flipping through it today realizing just how much it brightens my to-do list. I don't know enough about the Sierra Club policies to comment on the organization as a whole but they put out one heck of a calender every year, this is my second year using it. It is really something inspiring to me. There is a book I have been wanting for quite some time now, it is big and beautiful with the most amazing illustrations of plants and animals but if I had it now it would sit in a corner waiting to be read this I can see now everyday, and I do because it would be really hard to keep track of myself without it.
Hope everyone is having a beautiful Friday!

Wedding Website Nearing Launch
The Wedding website for Corvallis, Oregon is almost finished! I am so excited, this has been my baby for so many months now, I've been stealing time away from my studies compiling contact information and photographs and writing articles. All of the information will be done Friday! The "bare bones" of the website should be up next week and in April the web designers will come to teach me how to create a new skin and add the message boards I've been wanting. It is going to be beautiful!
I will post the URL when I know it - Do you have any ideas

Vera Wang
Tonight I thought I would blog about an inspiration of mine whose work gave me ideas and a creative outlet all through high school - Vera Wang.
I still cannot put into words all that inspires me about her designs but like many others I have fallen for their beauty. I cannot tell you how many times I have read her book Vera Wang on Weddings and found something new and beautiful. I use to make her wedding dresses my desktop background when I was majoring in apparel design. I had a boyfriend who was so sick of hearing about her that by the time we stopped dating people would sneak into his room to tape pictures of her designs on his wall just to drive him crazy - I didn't know it was that bad but apparently it was, he told me a few years later.
Vera once said "Conventional clothing has always looked pretty ridiculous on me" which may explain why her bridal dresses are so refreshing. Her use of color that year there was a large amount of green and some orange was a much needed addition into main stream bridal. This dress with a green velvet sash was one that I highly considered when I was engaged to be married in 2005 but I choose a choosing a Carmela Sutera gown that had a more attractive neckline

a very not good day
last night i realized i lost my long-adored travel mug and emotional attachment combined with little sleep let to a overreaction. I couldn't sleep i was so worried i would not find it; by this time i had remembered where i had left it but had no clue if the janitors had cleaned that hall that night - they throw all beverage containers away no exceptions even the super spendy ones. So i got up before 8 and got to the class room 5 mins to late to look - there was a class inside, i looked where i had sat and could not see it so i sought out the lost and found. I asked at the history department; a lovely office with mint green walls and wall hangings to move your mind. The lady there was very nice, called maintenance - who didn't come in and made me some licorice tea. I was doing ok then i remembered that i was in 15 min parking so i ran (on ice and slush) the whole way to my car - no ticket thank god! I went home changed out of my now wet clothes and tried to get ready for the day but instead i just started bawling - Mr. Joshua was super nice and told me what i knew; that i needed to get some sleep. So i took a nap and he said he would check for the travel mug on the way to his next class - he did and he found it. So i went to class and then to a study group for my midterm tomorrow morning and now i have zero energy left and I have to study for my midterm!

What really happend
He decided to take me to McMenamin's Edgefield Resort in Troutdale, Oregon! Too bad we got suck in bad weather and bad traffic and had started too late to being because I didn't know we we were going very far so I didn't get the day off work so we were going to get there at around 8 to stay for one night - So we called and they were really nice and let us reschedule for my birthday which will be much nicer and I will get work off and everything. Mr. Joshua picked a very nice Winery Package so we could have dinner and breakfast and wine and all that jazz while soaking up the atmosphere. I am so excited to go there for my birthday it will make the next three months super long! Anywho, so since we were half way there we just went to Lake Oswego where Mr. Joshua's parents live and went to Stanford's for some drinks and stayed with his parents. The next day we relaxed and did nothing but did manage to make it to a super cute vintage shop in Portland in a great little neighborhood which we plan to go back and explore sometime! All in all despite not getting to go it was really a nice mini vacation.
Thank you Mr. Joshua, I love you!

Almost done with the week
Moving out is going smoothly and Joshua and I are going out of town to celebrate dating for 1.5 years this weekend! He won't tell me where we are going just that I will love it - I'm so excited now all I have to do is get a good amount of homework done before we leave at noon tomorrow (I took the second half of day off from work and he took the entire weekend off). It is snowing right now and it is beautiful, it might not stop too :)

Home sweet home...
Ahh, the fire is burning, the sun is peaking through the clouds and I am in a big red armchair with a cup of coffee settling down to read. I am half moved out and staying with my parents this weekend. My brother is here to so it is nice, its like being kids again except with less bickering and without my sister :(
I am so excited to be getting caught up on all of my schoolwork after being sick - which is looking better by the way. I am getting longer winds of energy now. I only have a hundred or so pages to get caught up with my course readings and I am thinking about the future and maybe travel?
I am hoping that this time can be to spend time with my family and regroup my thoughts and creativity.

Movin On Out!
Hi everyone!
I have decided to be homeless!
Not really but kind of. I will be spending weekends with my parents and weekdays with Joshua and friends. I am so close to graduation (June) and I had planned on doing this in May but my apartment has developed a large mold problem which my property management company has refused to address. Five months is not long enough to move and put a deposit down for so this is the alternative. I am also looking for house-sitting jobs etc. but all I can say is this should be an interesting experience and I think I will get quite a bit more reading done now because I will be on campus a lot more and cleaning a lot less.
We shall see how this goes...
This is an interesting movie i watched last night for film class, I enjoyed the unexpected plot!

Almost done with the first week of school, so far so good except natural resources economics. Ugg I thought I was done with Econ of any kind! Anywho I have to read lots of stuff and clean the house but i think I might get to take Sunday off to go to Portland with Josh and vintage shop.
I love this dress and want it SO bad - I'm not Scottish for nothing you see, its because I LOVE PLAID!

Crochet!
So this book isn't super gorgeous but the tutorial in the back really helped me with making the bobbles and now I am thinking about going onto more complex bobble projects then just bobble lines. I'll keep you posted on that!
P.S. My internet is not working- thats probably because I don't pay for internet but regardless I will be bloggin a bit less now until this works itself out or I get rich

I wish I could remember where I got this picture but anyhow I think these are really nifty. Every time I run across this in my "to make" file I think of my friend Allison, she has such super retro style complete with such a great retro/vintage earing collection. I wish that I had the time to make these for her but I can knit in the car and in class, cross stitch is a bit harder then. Ahh, someday hopefully.

I got very sick yesterday and almost had to go to the hospital, very happy I didn't end up having too, the hospital is one of my pet peeves. Things are going nicely, furniture is moving and this place is really starting to feel like a home. It isn't as posh as could be but I refuse to purchase furniture to have to move it so quickly. The plants are growing, the aloe and Thai pepper are recovering nicely. Although still sick and needing Doctors appointments I am happy.
